Vintage and Retro Jersey Care
Always check and follow your jersey's original manufacturer care label first — those instructions take priority over any general guidance below.
Before You Wash
Inspect the care label inside your jersey. Vintage and retro jerseys vary widely in materials and construction — what works for one may damage another. When in doubt, hand wash or seek a specialist.
Washing
- Turn inside out before washing to protect printed names, numbers, sponsor logos, and embroidery.
- Use cool water (30°C / 86°F or below) — heat can shrink fabric, crack prints, and fade colours.
- Choose a gentle or delicates detergent. Avoid harsh or enzyme-based cleaners.
- Avoid bleach or whitening agents — these can strip colour and weaken fabric fibres.
- A gentle machine cycle or careful hand wash is preferable to a standard machine cycle.
Drying
- Do not tumble dry where possible — heat can cause shrinkage, cracking, and damage to applied lettering.
- Air dry at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or artificial heat sources.
- Lay flat or hang on a padded hanger to retain shape — wire hangers can distort shoulders.
Protecting Namesets, Sponsors & Prints
- Avoid scrubbing directly over raised or heat-applied lettering and badges.
- For stubborn stains near prints, spot-treat gently with a damp cloth rather than soaking the area.
- Ironing directly over prints, crests, or sponsor logos can cause irreversible damage — iron inside out on a low setting if needed, or avoid ironing altogether.
Storage
- Store clean and fully dry — moisture encourages mould and fabric degradation.
- Fold flat in a cool, dry place or hang on a padded hanger.
- Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
- For long-term storage, a breathable garment bag is preferable to plastic.
